Ship of Theseus
(SOT) is a whiff of fresh air; it’s one of the rarest of rare Indian films
which stimulates our brain to think which our films rather seldom do. Directed
my first time filmmaker Anand Gandhi, ship of theseus is the story of three
people with various life styles, thought processes & values.
The first story is that of the blind photographer played wonderfully by Egyptian
actor Aida El-Kashef who captures images based on her senses. She trusts her
instincts, sound and takes brilliant black & white pictures and lives along
with her boyfriend. Life changes after she undergoes cornea transplantation and
regains her vision, somehow she is not able to work with the same passion and
excitement as she was before and she faces trouble adjusting to this new environment
and her sense of sight.
The second story
which is the longest and the best one is about a monk named Maitreya
played by Neeraj Kabi who fights for animal rights and files a petition to
treat animals to improve their living conditions during testing for medical
drugs. He suffers from liver cirrhosis and his reluctant to take any medication
which he thinks is against his ideology, moral values & principles. How far
is he willing to go, if he has to choose between his ideology & himself? The interactions
between Maitreya and an intern Charvaka are the most interesting scenes in the
film, they discuss about various things like karma, morality, ethics, etc and
it seems so natural and doesn’t get preachy at any time. The physical transformation
of Maiterya as an ailing monk shocks us with various close up shots showing us
the amount of pain he undergoes. Neeraj Kabi who has lost several kilos for the
character stuns us with his terrific performance and will be remembered for a
long time.
The third story is
about a stock brocker Naveen played by Sohum Shah, he is a recent recipient of
a donated kidney. He lives with his Grandmother, after getting to know that a
poor man’s kidney was illegally stolen during an appendix surgery he goes to
Stockholm to bring justice to him. Sameer Khurana as Naveen’s
friend Mannu provides the much need comic relief. Gandhi ties all the three
central characters of the film brilliantly through the theseus paradox whether
a ship that has been restored by replacing all its parts remains the same ship?
Similarly will our human body be the same if the organs have been replaced? The
music of the film is a letdown, background score plays a crucial part in
intense films like this and in SOT a good BGM is missing. The climax is poetic,
emotional and intense.
Ship of Theseus
leaves us with some uncomfortable questions like morality, ethics &
identity, it’s one of the finest Indian films made in the recent years. Go with
loads of patience you will have a memorable 143 minutes in your life which you
will cherish forever.
Running Time: 143 Minutes.
