Do you feel sometime when you sitting on your laptop that you need an Internet connection immediately even if its very slow, so that you could check your mails or browse the web?
Do you feel sometimes that the browsing in your mobile is not good enough and you need to connect your laptop to your phone, so that you can browse in the big screen?
Here is the solution
GPRS connection lets you do all these without much hassle, but what if you don't want to pay such a huge price for what is a desire just for a few minutes. I think, most of us know about the "Browse Unlimited" Internet connection from Airtel (Post-paid) named as the famous NOP (Net-On-Phone). Airtel specifies that you can browse your heart's content using this service on your MOBILE phone. This is a crippled version of GPRS service (a.k.a WAP only connection) where the bandwidth is very low and is actually not a full fledged GPRS which you can use with any software which asks for it.
Assumption 1: Nokia Phone (I am not very sure if the menu / options are the same in other phones) and Internet Explorer in this example.
After this, you can connect your laptop to your mobile phone and browse the net. The speed will be around 2 - 3 kbps (you can't expect much!) but you can browse, or chat. Downloading is almost impossible.
Assumption 2: You know how to use your mobile as a modem. Its actually simple these days. Install the Nokia PC Suite and connect your mobile to the Laptop through on of the connection modes (Bluetooth, Cable, Infrared). Once this is installed, Nokia would have already made a Modem connection available through your mobile phone, which would be usually named Nokia <model name> <connection name> modem (e.g Nokia E51 USB Modem)
Create a Dialup Connection on the Laptop and Select The Nokia Modem for dialer and the dial-up number as *99#.
Leave the username and password fields blank.
Connect your phone to the laptop and activate the connection (PC Suite)
Go to Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options
Click on Modem Tab
Double-Click on the Nokia Modem or Select the modem and click Properties
Click on Advanced Tab
Under the Extra Initialization Box enter the following:
AT+CGDCONT=,"IP","airtelwap.com" <cr>
Click OK to Save this settings.
Now decide on the browser your will use for this connection. I assumed Internet Explorer.
Open Internet Explorer
Click on Tools > Internet Options > Connections
You will see the connection which we created in the list. Select it and click Settings.
Enter 100.1.200.99 for Proxy and 8080 in Port.
Click OK
Now you can connect your PC through your phone and browse the Internet using Internet Explorer.
