Its easy to attempt making a re-make of a hit film. But the attempt will be fruitful only when certain important aspects are taken into consideration. "Deiva Thirumagal" which happens to be a film based on "I am Sam" falls short of expectations on many counts. The glaring aspect is that though the movie was first re-made in Hindi as "Main Aisa hi Hoon" with Ajay Devgan in the lead, the Tamil version lacks the required impetus to strike a chord with the audience.
Krishna (Vikram) is an autistic individual with an IQ of a six-year old. irony would have it that his wife Banu dies during giving birth to their daughter Nila. Nila (Baby Sara) grows up with proper care from her father and a helping hand from the neighbors. Nila joins school and there she meets Swetha (Amala Paul) her school correspondent.
Swetha and Nila strike a good chord between them and things go on smoothly till Swetha finds out who Nila's father is. At this point of time, the world turns upside down for both Krishna and Nila. Krishna then struggles to get the custody of Nila and that's when he comes across Anuradha (Anushka) and her assistant Vinod (Santhanam).
Anuradha on knowing the complete background of Krishna and Nila vows to him that she will help him get Nila back. Does Anuradha succeed in uniting dad and daughter is all about in the rest of the film. Santhanam and M S Bhaskar provide the comic relief while Nasser plays the role of a successful lawyer appealing against Krishna. Karthik Kumar makes a guest appearance in the film.
In terms of acting skills, there is no one to match the acting of Vikram and Baby Sara. Anushka looks pretty in a de-glamorised role while Amala Paul for the first time play a urban centric character.
In terms of stroy and screenplay, the director should have considered more options as few scenes look irrelevant to the main plot which could have been avoided. The movie is tad long with a running time of 170 minutes which in the overall scheme of things could have been a bit shorter to make it more crisper.
Music by G V Prakash Kumar is intelligently used by the director excepting the "Vizhigalil" song which is a mis-fit in the flow of the story. Nirav Shah is wonderful handling the camera while Antony's editing should have been more crisp.
The movie might not do all that well in the box-office considering the fact that the entertainment quotient is given a back seat compared to the emotional bonding displayed between father and daughter in the film.
" Deiva Thirumagal" is an average emotional drama.
